Sony Announces Japan-Only Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition for November 19

October 14, 2026·3 min read

Sony's Japan-only Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition launches November 19 for ¥55,000, with Japanese-language account restrictions and a matching disc drive sold separately.

Sony has announced a Midnight Black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, launching in Japan on November 19, 2026, for ¥55,000 (including tax). The new color variant will arrive alongside a matching detachable disc drive, giving Japanese customers another option for the console.

The announcement was made through the Japanese PlayStation Blog on October 13. However, the Midnight Black model is currently confirmed only for Japan and carries the same language and account restrictions as Sony's existing Japanese-only PS5 Digital Edition. No international release has been announced.

The new Midnight Black console is a color variant of the cheaper PS5 Digital Edition that Sony introduced exclusively for Japan in November 2025. It retains the original model's ¥55,000 price and hardware specifications while replacing its white exterior with a black finish.

Like the existing Japanese-only model, the console is restricted to Japanese as its system language. It also requires a PlayStation account with Japan selected as its country or region, meaning accounts registered elsewhere cannot be used. Sony specifies that downloadable PS5 games and compatible PS4 games are supported through the Japanese PlayStation Store.

These restrictions distinguish the console from standard PS5 models sold internationally, which support multiple system languages and account regions.

The Midnight Black edition retains an 825GB SSD, 3D audio, backward compatibility with supported PS4 games and the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Sony has not announced any performance improvements or hardware upgrades for the new color variant.

Matching Midnight Black disc drive launches for ¥11,980

Sony will also release a Midnight Black detachable disc drive on November 19, priced at ¥11,980 (including tax). The accessory allows owners of compatible PS5 Digital Edition consoles to play supported physical PS5 and PS4 games.

The console itself does not include a disc drive, so players who want to use physical game discs must purchase the accessory separately. An internet connection is required when pairing the drive with the console.

The new color also matches existing Midnight Black PlayStation accessories, including the DualSense wireless controller and PlayStation Portal remote player.

Preorders begin October 20 in Japan

Sony will begin accepting preorders for the Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition and matching disc drive on October 20 through participating Japanese retailers and online stores.

The Midnight Black model is also eligible for Sony's promotional two-year warranty in Japan. Customers who purchase an eligible new console from an authorized retailer and complete the required campaign registration by March 31, 2027, can receive an additional year of manufacturer's coverage, extending the standard warranty to two years.

The console package includes a DualSense wireless controller, HDMI cable, USB cable, power cord and horizontal stand feet. Astro's Playroom comes preinstalled, while the vertical stand is sold separately.

For buyers outside Japan, Sony has not confirmed whether the Midnight Black console or matching disc drive will receive an international release. Midnight Black console covers are already available for compatible PS5 models in other markets, but they remain a separate accessory rather than the newly announced Japanese console.
