Fable faces budget concerns and major PS5 competition

July 28, 2026·3 min read
Fable has received two unwelcome updates months before its February 2027 release. Playground Games’ action RPG has reportedly gone well beyond its planned budget, while God of War Laufey is launching close to Fable on PS5.

Microsoft has not revealed Fable’s budget or commented on the report. The release-date clash is official and could make the PS5 launch more difficult for one of Xbox’s biggest upcoming games.

Fable Is Reportedly Over Budget

Sources familiar with the project described Fable as running “uncomfortably” beyond its budget. No estimated development cost was provided, and Microsoft and Playground Games have not confirmed how much has been spent.

The report follows a long development period and several changes to the release window. Going over budget does not mean the game is in danger, but it adds pressure on Fable to attract a large audience across Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5.

God Of War Arrives One Week Earlier

God of War Laufey will launch for PlayStation 5 on February 16, one week before Fable’s standard release. It also arrives two days before Fable’s five-day early access period begins on February 18.

That creates a difficult situation on PS5. Fable is entering PlayStation for the first time, but it will be competing for attention with a new game from one of Sony’s biggest franchises.

The two titles are not identical, but both are large fantasy action adventures aimed at a similar audience. Players with limited time or money may choose to finish God of War Laufey before buying Fable.

PS5 Sales Could Help Fable

Fable will launch on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS5 on the same day. It will also be available through Game Pass and support Xbox Play Anywhere across console and PC.

Game Pass can bring Fable a large audience, but PlayStation and Steam sales may help Microsoft recover more of the reported development costs. God of War Laufey’s timing could reduce that opportunity during the opening weeks.

Sony has not said the date was selected to compete with Fable. The close releases may simply be a coincidence.

Playground Is Rebuilding The Series

The new Fable is a reboot rather than a continuation of Lionhead Studios’ original trilogy. Players will create their own Hero and explore a redesigned Albion filled with combat, relationships, jobs and choices that affect their reputation.

Playground Games is best known for Forza Horizon, making Fable its first large action RPG. The game launches on February 23, 2027, while Premium Edition buyers can begin playing on February 18.
