Helldivers 2 hit by Steam backlash after anti-cheat update breaks major mod

Helldivers 2 has been hit with thousands of negative Steam reviews following its latest update, after Arrowhead Game Studios replaced GameGuard with Easy Anti-Cheat and broke several community-made mods in the process.

The switch arrived with the Devoid of Liberty 7.2.0 update on October 20. Arrowhead says the new system is intended to combat cheat mods that can affect other players and manipulate the Galactic War, but the changes have also disabled projects that some PC players had been using to expand or modify the game.

Among the biggest casualties is Custom Galactic War, an ambitious community project that allows players to run alternative versions of Helldivers 2's Galactic War. Its features include custom maps, altered campaigns and battles involving multiple enemy factions.

The project's developers said Easy Anti-Cheat has effectively stopped Custom Galactic War from functioning with the current version of the game. The mod is now down for the foreseeable future while its creators investigate possible alternatives, including continuing support for older game builds.

Other script-based and interface modifications have also been affected. Cosmetic mods are not universally blocked, with some continuing to function normally, but Arrowhead warned before the update that even non-malicious modifications could require changes from their creators.

That distinction is important because Arrowhead has not announced a blanket ban on Helldivers 2 modding. The studio says it appreciates cosmetic and non-gameplay modifications, but does not maintain a list of approved mods or guarantee that individual projects will remain compatible.

The reaction quickly reached the game's Steam page, where thousands of negative reviews appeared following the anti-cheat change. Recent reviews fell to a Mixed rating as players criticized broken mods, technical problems and Arrowhead's decision to restrict modifications they considered harmless or useful.

Some players have also reported crashes and launch problems since the update, although not every technical complaint can be directly attributed to Easy Anti-Cheat. The backlash is therefore broader than the loss of Custom Galactic War, even if mod compatibility has become one of the most visible complaints.

Helldivers 2 has experienced several sharp swings in Steam reviews since its 2024 launch. Previous controversies have involved the PlayStation Network account requirement, balance decisions, progression and changes to weapons, making Steam reviews a recurring way for dissatisfied players to pressure Arrowhead.

Arrowhead said it abandoned GameGuard because the previous anti-cheat implementation was not providing the level of protection it wanted. The studio specifically pointed to cheat mods capable of affecting other players, manipulating pickup rates and interfering with the shared Galactic War.

Easy Anti-Cheat arrived alongside additional security measures intended to stop that behavior. Arrowhead acknowledged beforehand that there would be collateral effects for mod users and advised anyone who believes a harmless modification is being blocked to contact its support team.

Update 7.2.0 contains more than the anti-cheat replacement, including weapon and stratagem balance changes and the Scope of Authority Warbond. Those additions have been overshadowed by the response to Easy Anti-Cheat, particularly among PC players whose preferred mods no longer work.

Arrowhead has not announced any reversal of the new anti-cheat system. Custom Galactic War's developers are continuing to investigate whether the project can return under the new restrictions, leaving one of the game's most extensive unofficial additions unavailable on the current build.
