Pokemon FireEmerald lets players explore Kanto and Hoenn

Pokemon fans have a new way to play through two classic regions in one Gen 3-style adventure. Pokemon FireEmerald, a new fan-made ROM hack, combines Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon Emerald into one extended campaign that lets players move from Kanto into Hoenn.

The project is not an official release from Nintendo, Game Freak or The Pokemon Company. It was created by ROM hack developer ManicPacer and released publicly through the Pokemon ROM hacking community, with players required to patch their own legal copy of Pokemon Emerald.

Pokemon FireEmerald is built on Pokemon Emerald, but it pulls in the Kanto adventure from FireRed. Players begin in Kanto, take on the familiar Gym challenge and can then move into Hoenn after becoming Kanto Champion.

That structure gives the hack a clear hook. Instead of treating FireRed and Emerald as separate saves, FireEmerald links them into one longer journey with shared progress.

The developer has also confirmed that Pokemon, items, money and Pokedex data obtained in Kanto carry over to Hoenn. That means players are not starting from scratch when they reach the second region.

FireEmerald is not an open-world Pokemon hack. Players cannot immediately jump between Kanto and Hoenn at the start of the game.

Hoenn becomes available after the player beats the Kanto League. The Sevii Islands also unlock at that point, and the player can choose which route to take first. Difficulty scaling is included so the post-Kanto path can adjust around that choice.

Free travel between Kanto and Hoenn becomes available later, after players finish Hoenn. That gives the hack a more traditional campaign flow while still delivering the appeal of a connected dual-region Pokemon game.

The hack also changes how the Sevii Islands work. In FireRed, later Sevii Islands content was tied to a Pokedex requirement. FireEmerald removes that 60-entry requirement, making the islands available immediately after becoming Kanto Champion.

That should make the post-game feel smoother for players who want to keep moving through content rather than pause for collection checks. It also gives FireEmerald more flexibility once Kanto is complete, since players can choose between Hoenn and the Sevii Islands.

Pokemon FireEmerald is built on the Pokeemerald-Expansion project, a common base for modern Gen 3 ROM hacks. That toolset helps developers add systems, update mechanics and push Emerald beyond its original limits.

Players still need the correct base game to use the patch. FireEmerald requires a Pokemon Emerald USA or Europe ROM, not FireRed. The hack does not distribute the original game files, which is standard for ROM hack projects trying to avoid packaging copyrighted material.

The appeal of FireEmerald is simple: it gives players a connected Kanto-to-Hoenn adventure in the style of the Game Boy Advance era. Pokemon has rarely let players explore multiple full regions in one official game, with Gold, Silver and Crystal’s return to Kanto still standing as the most famous example.

Pokemon FireEmerald is available now as a public release. It is still a fan-made project, but players who use ROM patches can revisit Kanto and Hoenn in one longer campaign.
