Xbox disc-to-digital feature could enter testing next week
July 13, 2026·3 min read
Xbox’s rumored disc-to-digital conversion system could enter public testing as early as next week through the Xbox Insider program. The feature, reportedly codenamed Project Positron, would let players turn eligible physical Xbox games into digital licenses tied to their Microsoft account.
Microsoft has not formally announced the system yet. The timing comes after Xbox paused this week’s usual Insider console update and hinted that the next build will be “worth the wait,” which has fueled speculation that the disc conversion feature is close to testing.
Project Positron would convert physical games
The reported system would use a player’s physical disc to grant a matching digital entitlement. That would allow the game to be played without keeping the disc in the console, as long as the license remains attached to the account.
The feature is expected to apply to Xbox One and Xbox Series X games first. Older Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not expected to be part of the first version, likely because of licensing, compatibility and disc-authentication limits.

Discs may still matter after conversion
The conversion system is not expected to make discs useless. Reports say the physical copy would still work after being converted, but the digital license could be removed if the disc is sold, traded or used by another account.
That detail would be important for preventing abuse. Without some form of ownership check, players could convert a disc, keep the digital version and then sell the physical copy. Xbox would need a system that keeps the convenience of digital access without turning every disc into a free extra license.
The timing fits Xbox’s hardware direction
The rumor arrives as Xbox continues to move toward a more digital platform. Microsoft already sells disc-free Xbox Series S hardware and has pushed Game Pass, cloud gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere as central parts of its ecosystem.
A disc-to-digital system would make more sense if future Xbox hardware reduces or removes disc drive support. It would give players with physical libraries a way to carry some games forward without needing the original disc in the console each time.
Players still care about physical libraries
The feature could land at a sensitive time for console players. Physical games remain important for collectors, used-game buyers, families sharing discs and players who do not want their entire library locked to one storefront.
A conversion system would not answer every ownership concern. Digital licenses can still depend on accounts, servers and platform rules. But it could soften the move away from discs by giving players a cleaner bridge between physical purchases and digital access.
Microsoft has not confirmed the rollout
For now, Project Positron remains unannounced. Xbox has not confirmed the name, release date, supported games, regions or whether the feature will appear in next week’s Insider build.
The next practical update is the coming Xbox Insider release. If the feature is included, testers should get the first clear look at how Microsoft plans to verify discs, assign digital licenses and protect existing physical collections as Xbox moves further into a digital future.
