Dark fantasy card game Grim Siege is now permanently free on Steam

Dark fantasy card battler Grim Siege is now permanently free on Steam, with existing players receiving 1,500 Mithril after the pricing change

Dark fantasy card battler Grim Siege has permanently switched to a free-to-play model on Steam, just over a month after originally launching as a paid game.

Developer Saqred Games announced the change in late October, saying removing the entry price should bring more players into its multiplayer modes and improve matchmaking. The game currently holds a 90% positive Steam rating, although that score is based on a relatively small number of user reviews.

Grim Siege launched on Steam on September 21, 2026 as a premium release. Saqred Games later announced that the game would become free starting October 26, removing the upfront price rather than running a temporary giveaway.

That distinction means players do not have a deadline to claim it. Grim Siege is now listed as Free to Play on Steam and can be downloaded without purchasing a copy first.

Saqred Games said the decision was made to help more people discover the game while creating busier Ranked and 2v2 matches. For a multiplayer-focused card game, expanding the available player pool could also make finding opponents considerably easier.

Existing players receive 1,500 Mithril

Players who supported Grim Siege before its free-to-play transition are receiving 1,500 Mithril as compensation. The reward is automatically added when eligible users log into the game after the change.

Existing progression is otherwise unaffected. Accounts, decks, collected cards, skins and other previously earned content remain intact, meaning early players do not need to restart following the switch.

Dark fantasy card battles revolve around destroying towers

Grim Siege
Grim Siege is built around 1v1 dark fantasy card battles in which each player attempts to defend their own tower while destroying their opponent's. Six playable classes and a status-effect system provide different combinations and counters when constructing decks.

The game uses three main resources during matches. Stone helps reinforce defensive positions, Blood powers magic and status effects, while Slaves support more aggressive actions against an opponent.

Players can fight AI opponents or enter online PvP through quick matches and Ranked play. Additional options include 2v2 battles, private lobbies for playing with friends and PvE content with roguelike elements.

Steam reviews remain strongly positive

The Steam page currently shows around 90% of user reviews as positive. The total number of reviews remains modest, so the rating represents a relatively small early player base rather than the volume associated with larger card games.

Moving permanently to free-to-play gives Saqred Games an opportunity to change that. Unlike a limited Steam promotion, players interested in Grim Siege can now try its card battles whenever they want without waiting for another sale or giveaway.
