Starfield Modder Demonstrates Seamless Planetary Landings Without Loading Screens
A new Starfield PC mod demonstrates seamless planetary landings with manual flight, autopilot and atmospheric effects, hiding loading transitions during descent. No public release date has been announced.
A Starfield modder has demonstrated a new project that allows players to fly directly from space to a planet's surface without the game's usual landing screens. The unofficial PC mod, called Seamless Landings, addresses one of the most discussed limitations of Bethesda's space RPG.
Created by Frederik Wessberg, the project has been in development for approximately six months. He shared gameplay footage on October 9, 2026, showing a spacecraft descending through a planet's atmosphere and landing on the surface. The mod remains in development, with no public release date announced.
Seamless Landings allows manual flight and autopilot descents

Wessberg's mod lets players approach planets and moons from orbit before descending to the surface. They can control their spacecraft manually or use autopilot to complete the landing.
During automated descents, players can leave the cockpit and walk around their ship while it travels toward the ground. The mod also supports landing on water, which is not possible through Starfield's standard landing system.
The demonstration features volumetric clouds, thunderstorms, lightning, auroras and atmospheric reentry effects. These visuals change according to the planet's environment, creating a more detailed transition between space and the surface.
Modder rebuilt Starfield's planetary rendering system

Wessberg explained that creating seamless landings required more work than he initially expected. In the unmodified game, planets viewed from space rely largely on textures and simplified atmospheric effects that are not designed for close approaches.
To overcome this limitation, he rebuilt the planetary rendering system in 3D using Starfield's existing biome maps, terrain information, climate data and atmospheric properties.
However, the mod does not remove every technical restriction in Bethesda's Creation Engine. Space and planetary environments cannot remain fully active simultaneously, so the project still needs to switch between them during descent.
Wessberg developed a system that loads the destination's assets in the background as the ship approaches the surface. Once the landing area is selected, manual flight controls are temporarily disabled while the required assets finish loading.
The transition between environments takes approximately 130 milliseconds, according to Wessberg. Cloud cover and atmospheric reentry effects conceal the switch, allowing the journey to appear uninterrupted without a visible loading screen.
The project revisits Bethesda's decision to separate space and planetary travel
The demonstration has renewed discussion about Bethesda's decision not to include seamless planetary landings in Starfield.
In a June 2022 interview with IGN, game director Todd Howard explained that Bethesda had decided early in development to treat space and planetary surfaces as separate environments. The studio chose to focus its development resources on other parts of the game rather than creating continuous transitions between them.
That decision drew criticism when Starfield launched in September 2023, particularly from players who wanted greater control over their spacecraft during exploration.
Wessberg said he began working on Seamless Landings after seeing other community projects introduce smoother grav jumps and planetary takeoffs. The addition of cruise mode to Starfield also encouraged him to tackle the remaining landing transition.
His work demonstrates a possible alternative, although it still relies on loading assets and switching environments behind the scenes. Wessberg is also working on performance optimization, and the project has not yet been tested through a public release.
Seamless Landings is being developed exclusively for PC using the Starfield Script Extender (SFSE). Wessberg plans to release the mod for free through Nexus Mods once it is ready.
