Nintendo Switch owners who paid for Aliens: Fireteam Elite can no longer launch the game. The cloud-only version was shut down on August 5. This left the game unusable because there was no local copy saved on the console.
The Switch release arrived in April 2023 at $29.99, with a $59.99 Ultimate Edition also available. It was removed from the eShop earlier this year and players were warned that access would end in August. Now the servers are gone, and buying it in the past offers no way back in.

A normal delisting does not usually erase a game someone already owns. Players can often keep an installed copy or continue using offline modes after sales stop. Aliens: Fireteam Elite cannot do that on Switch. Every session depended on remote servers from the start.
The game was sold as a full purchase rather than a temporary subscription. Players knew they were buying a cloud version, and Nintendo offered a demo so people could test their connection before paying. It was hard to know how long those servers would stay online.
There is no refund program for buyers who lost access. Cold Iron Studios is working on a discount for Switch owners who want the Switch 2 version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2. The discount details have not been finalized yet, so former Switch players are still waiting for more information.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite came to Switch as a cloud version because the console could not run the game directly. That brought the co-op shooter to Nintendo's console, but it also made the game fully dependent on an outside service. Once that service shut down, there was nothing left on the console to run the game.
Players on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox are in a different position. Those versions install locally and include offline play, so a future store delisting would not automatically make the whole game disappear. The Switch release had no such backup, even for players who only wanted to run missions with AI teammates.
The shutdown has revived an old concern around cloud-only games on Switch. Control, Hitman 3, and several Resident Evil titles also used streaming to reach the hardware. They are still playable for now. But Fireteam Elite shows what can happen when the company eventually shuts down the servers.
Cold Iron is avoiding the same problem with Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2. The sequel is planned for Nintendo Switch 2 this fall as a native release rather than another cloud version. Players will download and run the game on the hardware, removing the same dependency that ended access to the original.
The sequel launches first on August 25 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the Switch 2 version following later. It expands the squad from three Marines to four and keeps the co-op focus, with another campaign built around fighting Xenomorph swarms.
A discount on the sequel may help some owners, but it does not bring back the game they bought. The next useful detail is the compensation plan. Cold Iron still needs to explain who can get the discount, how much it will be, and when Switch players can claim it.
