Steam has a new action RPG that combines two very different game styles. Grim Axiom uses the isometric view and dungeon-crawling feel of Diablo, but its fights are much slower and more punishing. Every attack costs stamina, healing is limited, and a bad decision can end a good run quickly.
Rare Soup launched the game on PC on August 6, sending players into a dark underground labyrinth filled with mutated creatures, old ruins, and hidden paths. The early Steam response is Mixed. Some players enjoy the heavy combat and atmosphere, while others are struggling with the controls and repeated environments.

Grim Axiom does not play like a fast, loot-heavy dungeon crawler. Players need to have stamina, keep enough distance from enemies, and choose attacks carefully. Swinging too often can leave the character unable to dodge or escape, so even basic fights can punish anyone who tries to rush through them.
Taking too much damage early can make the next rooms more difficult. Some enemies can also be avoided through stealth, giving players a way to save health when a fight does not seem worth the risk.
The camera changes how those ideas feel compared with a normal third-person Soulslike. Attacks and enemy movement are shown from above. Players need to judge distance without the close camera used in Dark Souls. The structure feels familiar, but the moment-to-moment fighting has a different rhythm.

Exploration takes place across winding underground areas filled with puzzles, side quests, hidden routes, and characters. Checkpoints slowly create safer points deeper in the labyrinth. Reaching one after a difficult stretch gives players a place to recover and prepare before deciding how much farther they want to push.
Weapons and armor come with different stats, This gives players a chance to change their build as they find better gear. The system brings in some of the equipment hunting associated with Diablo, but players do not get flooded with loot all the time. New items support the journey rather than becoming the only reason to keep moving.
Plants found in the environment can provide temporary buffs that stack while the player stays alive. Those bonuses disappear after death, making a successful run more valuable the longer it continues. Players must decide if the next room is worth the risk or if it is better to stop.
Early Steam reviews are Mixed, although the number of ratings is still small. Some players have praised the old-school atmosphere, weighty attacks, and slower pace. There appears to be an audience for a darker action RPG that asks for more patience than a typical isometric dungeon crawler.
Other players have criticized the lack of a lock-on system, which can make certain fights harder to control. Environmental variety has also drawn complaints when long stretches of the labyrinth begin to look too similar. Both problems can get annoying in a game that focuses on careful movement and repeated exploration.
Grim Axiom has an interesting foundation, but the unusual genre mix will only go so far. Rare Soup now needs to make combat feel more reliable and give the dungeon enough variety to support repeat runs. If those areas improve, its slower style of isometric action could find a stronger audience on Steam.
