Marvel Just Set an Impossible Standard for Insomniac's Wolverine

July 29, 2026·3 min read

Marvel has raised expectations for Marvel's Wolverine before players have even touched it. The company has described Insomniac's Logan as its favourite version of the character, turning what could have been a confident new take into one of the hardest promises the studio now has to meet.

The game launches for PS5 on September 15, 2026, with Liam McIntyre playing Logan in a story set before the X-Men fully come together. Insomniac has already shown the claws, blood, and close-range violence fans expect, but Marvel's praise means the finished game must offer more than brutal combat and a strong trailer.

Wolverine has carried several different identities across comics, films, animation, and games. Some stories focus on the soldier worn down by years of violence, while others lean into the angry loner who can tear through a room in seconds. Insomniac now has to make both sides feel natural without reducing Logan to a simple rage machine.

Logan works with Jean Grey and members of Team X while mutants are hunted and forced into hiding. Bolivar Trask, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, the Reavers, and the Hand bring different kinds of danger, giving his anger a reason to exist beyond another revenge story.

That setup also creates a difficult comparison with older versions of the character. Hugh Jackman's Logan has shaped how many people see Wolverine, while X-Men '97 and decades of comics have explored his loyalty, guilt, fear, and violent past. Insomniac does not need to replace them, but Marvel's early claim invites players to judge whether this version belongs beside them.

The Combat Must Show More Than Rage

Logan's fighting style already looks very different from Spider-Man's. He closes distance quickly, uses the environment, attacks from above, and tears through enemies with claws that leave permanent damage. Rage abilities, Critical Strikes, vehicle fights, and his Healing Factor give the combat the speed and weight expected from a Wolverine game.

Logan is interesting because his body heals faster than the rest of him. Wounds close, but guilt, fear, and old memories stay behind. Quiet scenes with Jean, Team X, and the mutants he is trying to protect need to carry the same confidence as the finishers shown in trailers.

Liam McIntyre's performance will hold those two sides together. He has spoken about the physical effort behind Logan's anger, but also the loyalty and care hidden underneath it. Players need to believe the same man can lose control in one scene and still protect someone gently in the next without either side feeling forced.

Insomniac Needs Its Own Wolverine

The wider Insomniac universe gives Logan a useful contrast with Spider-Man. Peter and Miles live in public, work with the city, and are treated as heroes even when people question them. Mutants face fear, secrecy, and organised violence, placing Wolverine in a harsher world where saving people does not guarantee trust.

Sabretooth, Mystique, Sunfire, and Jean all have history with Logan, and those relationships should expose why he keeps joining groups before pushing them away. The best Wolverine stories understand that he wants connection even when he expects every bond to end badly.

Marvel may have set the standard too early, but Insomniac can still earn that confidence. The game does not need to prove this is the only version of Wolverine that is important. It needs to make Logan's rage, pain, loyalty, and fear feel connected by the time the story ends, rather than treating them as separate parts of a familiar character.
