NieR: Automata Steam Update Demands 366GB of Storage as Square Enix Investigates
A November 6 Steam update that added three languages made NieR: Automata ask for 366.56GB of free space. Square Enix is investigating and shared a workaround.
NieR: Automata players are encountering an unusual installation problem after the game's latest Steam update began demanding 366.56GB of free storage. The action RPG normally requires around 50GB, but a bug appears to have increased the space needed to install it more than sevenfold.
The issue emerged following a November 6, 2026 update that added three new languages. Square Enix has acknowledged the problem and provided a temporary workaround while it investigates the cause.
NieR: Automata's Latest Update Adds Three Languages

The latest Steam patch introduces Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean language support. These are the only changes listed in Square Enix's official update notes, with no additional gameplay content or major technical improvements announced.
However, players attempting to install the game have encountered a 366.56GB storage requirement. The figure is considerably higher than the 50GB still listed on the game's Steam store page.
The problem can prevent players with less available storage from installing the game, even though the update itself does not contain hundreds of gigabytes of new content.
Steam Appears to Count Each DLC at the Game's Full Size

The unusually large requirement appears to be connected to how Steam calculates downloadable content. Following the update, all eight DLC entries were listed as requiring approximately 40.73GB each, matching the base game's size. Together with the main game, these entries produce the reported 366.56GB requirement.

The figure represents the free space Steam requests before installation, rather than the game's actual installed size. In an independent installation test, Japanese publication Game*Spark found that the completed game occupied approximately 40.7GB.
Square Enix has not confirmed whether incorrect DLC size calculations are responsible for the issue.
Square Enix Shares a Temporary Fix for Steam Players
Square Enix acknowledged the problem through the official NieR account on X, confirming that Steam was requesting more storage than expected. The publisher apologized and said it was investigating the cause.
As a temporary workaround, players can open NieR: Automata in their Steam library, select Properties > DLC, and uncheck the available add-ons before downloading the base game.
Square Enix says disabling the DLC allows players to download the base game without meeting the inflated storage requirement. The company is investigating the problem but has not announced when a permanent fix will be available.

NieR: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful machines.
