Fallout 76 has a release date for its long-awaited native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S update. Bethesda will roll out the new console versions on September 15 alongside The Slasher, the next major free update for its online RPG.
Bethesda had previously targeted a summer release and opened testing for the PS5 and Xbox Series versions earlier this year. The September update brings that work into the live game, with better performance, stability, and visual quality across consoles. Older PlayStation and Xbox hardware will receive some improvements as well.

Bethesda is targeting 60 FPS across Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PS5 Pro. The native versions also improve draw distances and shadows, while variable refresh rate support will be available on all four current-generation console models when used with compatible displays.
Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro support 4K on compatible displays, while the standard PS5 runs at 1440p. Bethesda has not listed a higher resolution for Xbox Series S, although the console is included in the 60 FPS and VRR targets.
Xbox One X will also support 4K, while PS4 Pro moves to 1440p. Other previous-generation consoles remain at 1080p. Bethesda says the wider Gen 9 work will improve performance, stability, and visual fidelity for console players and allow the team to optimize individual platforms more easily in future updates.
Bethesda was still preparing a console testing period in July and had not given players a final release date at that point, making September 15 the first firm date for the completed rollout.

The same update introduces a new storyline built around someone taking up the name of the Pint-Sized Slasher. Players will search for clues, uncover unmarked graves, and fight Slasher fanatics appearing around Appalachia before eventually confronting the impostor behind the attacks. Rewards include a unique Power Armor set and a new weapon called the Super Slasher.
Bethesda says the story will develop over several fall updates, with new activities layered on as the storyline progresses. The studio describes it as a first-of-its-kind update for Fallout 76, so September 15 begins the event rather than delivering its entire storyline in a single patch.
Players will be able to change Legendary mods on more than 80 uniquely named weapons found across Appalachia, opening weapons that previously had fixed identities to more build customization.
The change arrives alongside the native console release rather than being restricted to PS5 and Xbox Series players. Bethesda is treating September 15 as a wider Fallout 76 update, with the console work forming one part of a larger set of changes to combat rewards, seasonal progression, and the fall storyline.
September 15 will also introduce Legacy Seasons, allowing an older season to run alongside the current one. The first returning season is Armor Ace and the Power Patrol in Cold Steel. Both tracks use the same pool of season tickets. Players can choose whether to spend their tickets on current rewards or items they missed previously.
Previously claimed rewards will already be marked as collected, while Legacy Season rewards must be unlocked in order. Bethesda has also added some new rewards to the returning season, although the original seasonal game board will not be available to claim.
Bethesda plans to keep rotating Legacy Seasons rather than treating Armor Ace as a one-off return. Players can vote on the next returning season until August 21, with the winner due to be announced on August 25 before it arrives alongside Fallout 76's winter update.
